Inleiding door promotieonderzoeker Shila Khuki de Vries (Bangladesh)

Internationale adopties zijn een uiting van kolonialisme en systemisch racisme. Het Westerse superioriteitsgevoel leidde tot het idee dat kinderen uit arme landen, beter af zouden zijn in de rijkere landen. Het ‘redden van een kind uit een arm land’, ingegeven door white saviourism, is daar een ultieme uiting van. De belangen van Westerse wensouders werden boven de rechten van eerste ouders en kinderen geplaatst. Van geadopteerden werd verwacht dat ze zich volledig aanpasten aan de Westerse cultuur (assimilatie), hun oorspronkelijke culturele identiteit werd genegeerd. VER VAN HIER de-kolonialiseert het ‘adoptiesprookje’ door de stem van geadopteerden een podium te geven.

Tijdens deze artist talk krijg je de kans om in gesprek te gaan met de kunstenaars van de exposties, die doorlopend te zien zijn in Studio de Bakkerij. Deze middag is in het Engels. Sam Uittenbogaart van House of Knowledge zal de artist talk leiden.

International adoptions are an expression of colonialism and systemic racism. The perception of Western superiority led to the belief that children from poor countries would be better off in wealthier nations. The idea of "saving a child from a poor country," driven by white saviorism, is the ultimate expression of this. The interests of Western prospective parents were placed above the rights of first parents and children. Adoptees were expected to fully assimilate into Western culture, while their original cultural identity was disregarded and erased. VER VAN HIER decolonizes the "adoption fairy tale" by giving a platform to the voices of adoptees.

During this artist talk, you will have the opportunity to engage with the artists whose work is exhibited at Studio de Bakkerij during VER VAN HIER. This afternoon’s event will be in English.
